Blightheart is a soulbound arquebus in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. It can only be bound to a Chanter, Ranger or Wizard.

Description[edit | edit source]

Base
A small, oilskin-wrapped letter lay with the arquebus in the grave. The penned letters are blocky and deliberate.

'Well, now you've done it, fool. I don't know if you be a graverobber or just an opportunistic knacker, but you've stepped into a mess in either case. You found the gun, and I don't suppose anything I write here will convince you to put it back where you found it. So be it. Listen, and listen well.

There be dark places in certain forests where souls linger after death. Hangman trees, quicksand mires, deadfalls, and the like - places where people met their end. The mênpŵgra find these places, hungry for the soul energies. I seen them. It was my job to clear them out of the woods, them and other monsters, and I was damn good at it. Good enough to become prideful - and foolish.

I killed me a big one, a mênpŵgra matriarch. A mean bitch, she was, cruel and hungry. Thought I'd make her into a trophy. Took her twisted, wooden heart out and fashioned a new tool of my trade.'

There's a blank area at the bottom of the letter, as if some of the text is missing.

Level 1
New words appear at the bottom of the letter:

'The gun was a fine one, as you can surely attest. Shot true and served me well. But it weren't me it served, do you ken? Took me a while to notice it, the change. My fingernails went black, teeth yellowed. I couldn't sleep. I couldn't eat. Still, I hunted - had to hunt, you see.

Every beast I slew fed the heart. She was in there, I reckon, the mênpŵgra, using me in stay of her own body to collect souls and spread her rot. Insatiable, she was.'

Level 2
The writing that follows begins to sprawl like gnarled roots.

'You'd be surprised how long a body can ignore real sickness. I told myself it would pass, even as my teeth fell out of my head and my hair, by then green as moss, withered. Was it me the bitch was eating, one piece of my soul at a time?

Couldn't be, I told myself. Stronger than ever I was, still a crack shot, still able to do my duty. I was just getting up there in years, I said. If I kept the woods safe using the matriarch's spoiled magic, then the joke was on her, ken it?

It be when the village crops started dying off, I took notice. When the cattle thinned with blight. When the sickness started, and mothers wept. By the gods, what a fool I'd been. And still, the heart was hungry.'

Level 3
The final entry is difficult to read. The letters twist and tremble.

'So, I took it away, the gun. Took it as far away from the village as I could, chartered a ship and sailed south.

She knew what I was planning, for certain. The heart didn't take kindly to me interrupting her meal, and she turned on me. The rot quickened, and I withered like a severed vine, shrinking in on myself. The crew of the vessel took sick. The timbers of the ship turned black with mold and began to leak. We ran aground here, as good a place as any. The crew be dead and the ship no good to me.

I buried the heart where it couldn't hurt nobody. Then you come along and dig it up. As I said, I be long-gone by now, and I can't stop you. If you be intent on taking the gun, so be it. Just remember, my foolish friend - the heart always be hungry. You'd best feed it regular, lest it look to you.'
